OUTSTANDING WOMEN AT RA; SONYA KNIGHT

AN INTERVIEW WITH SONYA KNIGHT

What does women’s history month mean to you?

Taking time to reflect on the accomplishments and the impact women have made throughout history.

How did you get started in property management?

As a volunteer, I provided administrative support for Women of Destiny, Inc., a RAM supported non-profit women’s group created by Barbara Moore (former Vice President, RAM Resident Relations).    This led to me becoming a staffed Administrative Assistant in the Resident Relations Department (now Resident Services).

What positions have you held with RAM?

I have had several positions with RAM:  AA, Resident Relations Specialist, Program Coordinator, Director—all in the Resident Services Department.

What challenges do you have to overcome to fulfill your role?

The biggest challenge I have to overcome is integrating leadership into my core identity.  I have always played supportive roles in my career.  Leading the Resident Services Department and the DE&I Committee has created an opportunity for me to shift my identity and to embrace my role as a leader.

How do you empower yourself and the women around you?

I like giving others the opportunity to lead.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

As a woman, don’t stay inside the box you feel was created for you.  Take wild chances throughout life and constantly broaden your horizons.

What advice do you have for the women of our organization?

Empathy, good communication skills and emotional intelligence are the very qualities that make us women natural born leaders.
