OUTSTANDING WOMEN AT RA; KIM MAGGARD

AN INTERVIEW WITH KIM MAGGARD

What does women’s history month mean to you?

A dedicated month we celebrate and remind ourselves of the accomplishments women have made throughout the years.  A month we honor those who have come before us and those who continue to inspire us.

How did you get started in property management?

I got my start in property management pretty early on, just right out of high school.  I took a position as a part time leasing consultant while attending college. Never my intention for it to stick, but here we are 33 years later and still loving what I am blessed with the opportunity to do.

What positions have you held with RAM?

Was very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to join the RAM team in 2003 as a Regional Manager.  Through the guidance and mentorship, I have received, as well as the perseverance and dedication, self-driven, I progressed to Regional Vice President, and on to now where I currently hold position of Senior Vice President of Operations.

What challenges do you have to overcome to fulfill your role?

One thing is certain we are faced with challenges and obstacles daily in this industry and life.  In general, my go to in overcoming is face it head on, look at it from all angles, remain positive, and never be afraid to ask for help.  More specifically, the biggest obstacle I think we can all relate to is finding that happy life-work balance.  Don’t think I have perfected a full proof solution, but I have recognized and continue to remind myself what keeps me grounded.  One, make sure you have a job you love; two, get organized, set your goals, and prioritized; next make sure you have put boundaries in place, being available for yourself and family; and finally, don’t be afraid to unplug, that downtime is crucial.

How do you empower yourself and the women around you?

When empowering myself and others I look to the following as a guide: always give credit where it is due.  Acknowledge, praise, and recognition goes a long way; allow for differences of opinion.  It is crucial to be professional and respectful even when there is a disagreement, you might find a common ground; seek continual education – don’t stop learning or questioning.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Oh goodness I would impart so much to my younger self, but the lessons I have learned are what made me who I am today.  But to have known early on would have made it so much easier. So, my top three pieces of advice are: (1) Don’t judge yourself in comparison to those around you, instead judge yourself against what you are capable of; (2) Positivity is infectious, and happiness is most definitely a choice. Smile more and worry less; (3) Don’t let failure get you down, focus on getting back up as soon as possible; Bonus – Remember where you came from and always keep yourself grounded and humble.

What advice do you have for the women of our organization?

Our industry, our company is strong and continues to evolve.  As you progress know your future holds promise that can be achieved through hard work, dedication, and education.  Never stop learning.  Become that mentor to the generation that follows you.
