We will be doing raffles for anyone who attends and does the biometric screening so make sure to schedule your appointment!

On Friday June 11th, the staff at Villa Patricia received a call stating the elevators at Villa Patricia I were stopping and jumping.  The elevator technicians were called immediately and started working on the elevators at noon.  They did not complete the repairs until around 9PM; having to leave to get parts in between.  The next day the elevators began to have issues and again the elevator technicians came out to repair the elevators from noon until 10:30PM; again having to leave for items to complete the repair.  During both of these elevator outage events, the staff of Villa Patricia were AMAZING!  They helped elderly residents bring their personal items/groceries to their homes as well as assisted in helping them climb the stairs safely to their homes.  They also kept residents comfortable  in the Community Room serving them water and snacks until they could be assisted in getting up the stairs to their homes.

 

Way to go Villa Patricia team for going above and beyond to ensure our residents were comfortable, safe and taken care!!!  You Rock!

Today, Juneteenth is enjoying a phenomenal growth rate within communities and organizations throughout the country. Institutions such as the Smithsonian, the Henry Ford Museum and others have begun sponsoring Juneteenth-centered activities. In recent years, a number of local and national Juneteenth organizations have arisen to take their place alongside older organizations – all with the mission to promote and cultivate knowledge and appreciation of African American history and culture.

 

Juneteenth today, celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures. As it takes on a more national, symbolic and even global perspective, the events of 1865 in Texas are not forgotten, for all of the roots tie back to this fertile soil from which a national day of pride is growing.

 

The future of Juneteenth looks bright as the number of cities and states creating Juneteenth committees continues to increase. Respect and appreciation for all of our differences grow out of exposure and working together. Getting involved and supporting Juneteenth celebrations creates new bonds of friendship and understanding among us. This indeed brightens our future – and that is the Spirit of Juneteenth.

The History of Juneteenth

 

America’s birthday is fast approaching. But let’s not wait for July 4 to light the fireworks. There is another Independence Day on the horizon.

Juneteenth falls on June 19 each year. It is a holiday whose history was hidden for much of the last century. But as the nation now observes the 150th anniversary of the Civil War’s onset, it is a holiday worth recognizing. In essence, Juneteenth marks what is arguably the most significant event in American history after independence itself—the eradication of American slavery.

 

For centuries, slavery was the dark stain on America’s soul, the deep contradiction to the nation’s founding ideals of “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” and “All men are created equal.” When Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, he took a huge step toward erasing that stain. But the full force of his proclamation would not be realized until June 19, 1865—Juneteenth, as it was called by slaves in Texas freed that day.

The westernmost of the Confederate states, Texas did not get news of Gen. Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomatox that April until two months after the fact. But they heard once Union Gen. Gordon Granger, a New Yorker and West Point graduate with a distinguished wartime service record, arrived in Galveston Bay with more than 2,000 Union troops. It was on June 19 that he publicly read General Order No. 3, which began: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

 

In amazement and disbelief, the 250,000 former slaves in Texas learned that they had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, which could not be enforced until the war was over. (It applied only to the states “in rebellion” at the time it was issued.) Shocked, disoriented, most likely fearful of an uncertain future in which they could do as they pleased, the liberated slaves of Texas celebrated. Their moment of jubilee was spontaneous and ecstatic, and began a tradition of marking freedom on Juneteenth.

 

But Juneteenth was never accorded official respect or recognition. In the bitterness of the Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras, few states of the former Confederacy had any interest in celebrating emancipation. And as many African-Americans migrated north, especially in the Depression era, Juneteenth became a largely forgotten vestige of the Civil War era.

 

Before emancipation, America’s slaves and anyone else who prized equality, freedom and liberty knew that the Declaration of Independence only meant equality, freedom, and liberty for some.

 

This year, let’s remember Juneteenth, the holiday that doesn’t mark a document, a battle, a birthday or a national tragedy, but the fundamental promise of America being more completely realized—the day on which Thomas Jefferson’s rousing rhetoric finally rang true throughout America, for all Americans.

Dear Royal American Family,

 

Everything has changed so quickly. A month or so ago it was business as usual and now suddenly everyone, everywhere in the world, is dealing with Covid-19. It is a trying time and it is certainly something none of us have dealt with in our lifetimes.

 

But there is good news amongst the chaos. Many people in the US who contract this virus will have minor symptoms, and others, especially children and young people, will possibly be completely asymptomatic. This will pass, that is a guarantee. It will just take some time.

 

That being said, the health and safety of all of our employees is our top priority. We are taking this threat very seriously and have put measures in place to protect everyone at each of our Royal American companies. We encourage everyone to familiarize yourselves with the new protocols and take all the recommended precautions.

 

Currently if your work situation lends itself to working from home and you are 60+ and/ or have underlying health conditions, you have the option to work from home if you would feel more comfortable. Also, those who have young children who will be out of school and daycare have the option to work from home. Please clear any alternate work situations with your supervisor first.

 

We will continue to monitor the guidelines from the CDC, the WHO, and our local health officials and adjust our protocols and work schedules accordingly. We realize there is a high level of anxiety and we as a company are trying to do all we can to minimize the effects on employees and residents. Through thoughtful measures and an abundance of caution, we will get through this trying time.

 

John O’Connor, a healthcare industry writer, had some encouraging words recently. “To be clear, we need to give the coronavirus outbreak all the attention, respect and common sense it deserves,” said O’Conner. “But here’s the thing: As bad as this is—and it’s plenty bad—it will not last forever. Sooner or later, we will find a way to treat the coronavirus—or at least get it under control.”

 

I think we can all take some comfort in the knowledge that, eventually, this crisis will pass, and we must all be strong until it does. Royal American is a family and we always have been. We will get through this together and we will be stronger on the other side.
