A PERSONAL LOOK AT BLACK HISTORY MONTH CONTINUED…

Black History Month to me is a time to celebrate and highlight the many accomplishments we have achieved. February reminds us of the great impacts which shaped black culture. I am extremely grateful to ALL of those who have paved the way before me, to open doors for opportunities and advancement in this world. It gives me the courage to push myself and my son to achieve all his dreams his heart desires and accomplish all he wants to in life.

One of my favorite quotes that I use in my everyday life is “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”.  Maya Angelou

When I migrated to the U.S. from Haiti, a country portrayed poorly by the media, it was incredibly challenging for me. But I have come to know the history of my predecessors, like how the Haitian revolution helped countries, including the US, to be where they are today.  There are many fascinating stories of how Black communities around the world have been making contributions, but if they are not told, they are treasures hidden in plain sight.

“Black history is world history” is factual and should be taken into consideration globally.  The black community has been making contributions around the world, not just in one continent. Historian Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Black History Month, said it best regarding lack of knowledge, “Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished, lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.”
